Cancer Surgery

Major surgery is generally indicated in patients who develop oesophageal and gastric cancer (OGC). Surgery is generally performed in combination with chemotherapy. The treatment team consists of Dr Smith, oncology specialists, dietician and physiotherapist. Surgery for OGC is performed laparoscopically (keyhole). Patients undergoing surgery for OGC will generally stay in hospital for a week to 10 days in the case of gastric (stomach) cancer surgery and approximately two weeks in the case of surgery for oesophageal cancer. Surgery for OGC is complex and Dr Smith will discuss this with you in detail during the course of your treatment.
